The only approved gene therapy in Japan for rare disorders is <strong>ZOLGENSMA, <\/strong>which is approved for treating Spinal Muscular Atrophy (SMA) in patients under 2 years, including those who are presymptomatic at diagnosis. <strong>LUXTURNA<\/strong> was approved in the US and EU in 2017 and 2018, respectively for patients with confirmed biallelic RPE65 mutation-associated retinal dystrophy, and has not been approved in Japan yet. <strong>Novartis <\/strong>is currently investigating <strong>LUXTURNA <\/strong>in a Phase III trial (NCT04516369; active, not recruiting) in Japan.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Gene_therapies_in_Japan_Challenges_in_reimbursement_or_limited_patient_demand\"><\/span><strong>Gene therapies in Japan: Challenges in reimbursement or limited patient demand?<\/strong>&nbsp;&nbsp;<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Differences in regulatory processes and requirements might cause approval lag. There are several potential reasons why there may be fewer gene therapies for rare disorders treatment available in Japan compared to other countries. One possible factor is the <strong>regulatory environment in Japan<\/strong>. The Pharmaceuticals and Medical Devices Agency (PMDA) regulates the approval of new drugs and medical devices in Japan, and their review process can take several years to complete. This can be a significant barrier to developing and approving new gene therapies for rare disorders treatment in Japan.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Another potential factor is the <strong>research and development landscape<\/strong> in Japan. While Japan has a strong research and development infrastructure, it may not be as focused on gene therapy as other countries. In 2014, Japan introduced a new law called the <strong>Regenerative Medicine Promotion Act<\/strong>, which aimed to accelerate the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.delveinsight.com\/blog\/regenerative-medicine-in-japan\">development and approval of regenerative medicine<\/a>, including cell therapies. This law allowed for conditional approval of regenerative medicine products based on early-phase clinical trial data, which reduced the time and cost required for clinical development.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In addition, <strong>Japan\u2019s government has provided significant funding and support for regenerative medicine research and development<\/strong>, which has helped create a favorable environment for the industry\u2019s growth. This includes the establishment of the Japan Agency for Medical Research and Development (AMED), which provides funding and support for regenerative medicine research and development.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Moreover, <strong>Japan\u2019s aging population and high prevalence of certain diseases such as cancer and <\/strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.delveinsight.com\/report-store\/parkinsons-disease-market-size-analysis-treatment\"><strong>Parkinson&#8217;s disease<\/strong><\/a><strong> have also contributed to the demand for cell therapies<\/strong>. As a result, many companies in Japan have focused on developing and commercializing cell therapies to address these unmet medical needs.
