{"id":3900,"date":"2019-01-04T11:02:57","date_gmt":"2019-01-04T05:32:57","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.delveinsight.com\/blog\/?p=3900"},"modified":"2024-09-18T13:18:35","modified_gmt":"2024-09-18T07:48:35","slug":"machine-learning-models-to-help-predicting-cancer-symptoms-plan-treatment","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.delveinsight.com\/blog\/machine-learning-models-to-help-predicting-cancer-symptoms-plan-treatment","title":{"rendered":"Machine Learning Models to Help Predicting Cancer Symptoms, Plan Treatment"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p class=\"has-drop-cap\">In what could be regarded as a first of its kind, researchers from the <strong>Centre for Vision, Speech and Signal Processing at the University of Surrey<\/strong> in the <strong>United Kingdom<\/strong> have recently reported&nbsp;that they created two machine learning models that are able to precisely predict the severity of three common symptoms faced by cancer patients: <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.delveinsight.com\/blog\/attention-deficit-hyperactivity-disorder-adhd\/\">depression<\/a>, anxiety and sleep disturbance<\/strong>.  And, these three symptoms play potential roles in diminishing the quality of life in <a href=\"https:\/\/www.delveinsight.com\/blog\/cervical-cancer-what-you-need-to-know\/\"><strong>cancer<\/strong> <\/a>patients.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-drop-cap\"><br> During the research, the researchers analyzed the data of symptoms experienced by cancer patients during the course of <strong>computed tomography X-ray treatment<\/strong>. The team used different time periods to test whether the <strong>machine learning algorithms<\/strong> are able to accurately predict the severity of symptoms and also if the symptoms surfaced.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><br> The results showed that the <g class=\"gr_ gr_9 gr-alert gr_gramm gr_inline_cards gr_run_anim Grammar multiReplace\" id=\"9\" data-gr-id=\"9\">actual<\/g> reported symptoms were very close to those predicted by the machine learning algorithms. This work has been a collaboration between the <strong>University of Surrey and the University of California in San Francisco (UCSF)<\/strong>.          <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>                                                                                                                                                             <br> In the context of the research, <strong>Payam Barnaghi, Professor of Machine Intelligence at the University of Surrey<\/strong>, said, \u201cThese exciting results show that there is an opportunity for machine learning techniques to make a real difference in the lives of people living with <a href=\"https:\/\/www.delveinsight.com\/blog\/now-artificial-intelligence-to-accurately-identify-cancer-cells\">cancer<\/a>. They can help clinicians identify high-risk patients, help and support their symptom experience and pre- actually plan a way to manage those symptoms and improve quality of life.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><br> In essence, doctors could get an edge in treating <a href=\"https:\/\/www.delveinsight.com\/blog\/66-year-ohio-woman-becomes-cancer-free-thanks-to-car-t-cell-therapy\/\">cancer <\/a>by implementing the machine learning algorithms, which are able to
