It arises in Bile ducts.  The Bile duct is a long tubule like structure which connects the liver (hepatic duct) to the <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.delveinsight.com\/report-store\/gallbladder-cancer-pipeline-insight\">gall bladder <\/a><\/strong>(cystic duct).  It carries bile, which helps in digestion of food, from gall-bladder (produced in the liver) to intestines. CCA arises from the epithelial cells of the intrahepatic and extrahepatic bile ducts. It is a kind of <strong>malignant <\/strong><g class=\"gr_ gr_7 gr-alert gr_spell gr_inline_cards gr_disable_anim_appear ContextualSpelling multiReplace\" id=\"7\" data-gr-id=\"7\"><strong>tumor<\/strong><\/g> which can form in any part of the bile duct.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>CCA has three types &#8211; <strong>Intrahepatic (<\/strong><g class=\"gr_ gr_6 gr-alert gr_spell gr_inline_cards gr_run_anim ContextualSpelling ins-del multiReplace\" id=\"6\" data-gr-id=\"6\"><strong>iCCA<\/strong><\/g><strong>), Perihilar (pCCA) and Distal (<\/strong><g class=\"gr_ gr_7 gr-alert gr_spell gr_inline_cards gr_run_anim ContextualSpelling ins-del multiReplace\" id=\"7\" data-gr-id=\"7\"><strong>dCCA<\/strong><\/g>). Intrahepatic cholangiocarcinoma affects the small bile ducts within the <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.delveinsight.com\/report-store\/liver-failure-market\">liver<\/a><\/strong>. <g class=\"gr_ gr_8 gr-alert gr_spell gr_inline_cards gr_run_anim ContextualSpelling ins-del multiReplace\" id=\"8\" data-gr-id=\"8\">Perihiliar<\/g> (or Klatskin <g class=\"gr_ gr_10 gr-alert gr_spell gr_inline_cards gr_run_anim ContextualSpelling multiReplace\" id=\"10\" data-gr-id=\"10\">tumor<\/g>) starts at <g class=\"gr_ gr_9 gr-alert gr_spell gr_inline_cards gr_run_anim ContextualSpelling ins-del multiReplace\" id=\"9\" data-gr-id=\"9\">hilium<\/g> where two major bile ducts unite leaving the liver. Distal cholangiocarcinoma begins from the <strong>small intestine<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-causes-and-symptoms\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Causes_and_Symptoms\"><\/span><strong>Causes and Symptoms<\/strong><span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h4>\n\n\n\n<p>In most of the cases, the cause behind cholangiocarcinoma is unknown. However, these are <strong>genetic <\/strong>mutations in bile cells. There exist various non-genetic risk factors behind cholangiocarcinoma. These include a bile duct disease called <strong>primary sclerosing cholangitis, bile duct stones or cysts<\/strong>, and exposure to certain chemical toxins used in manufacturing. A certain lifestyle like smoking and drinking can also induce the disease.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Symptoms include <strong>yellowing of the skin and whites of the eyes (jaundice), itchy skin, pale stools, and dark urine, loss of appetite and weight loss, persistent tiredness, abdominal pain and swelling, high fever, chills and shivering<\/strong> etc. And, the lack of early detection leads to an increase in the prevalence level of CCA worldwide.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-incidence-of-cases\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Incidence_of_Cases\"><\/span><strong>Incidence of Cases<\/strong><span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h4>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-media-text alignwide\" style=\"grid-template-columns:40% auto\"><figure class=\"wp-block-media-text__media\"><img decoding=\"async\" width=\"878\" height=\"928\" src=\"https:\/\/assets.delveinsight.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/02\/15170721\/Untitled-Project-1.png\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-4314\" srcset=\"https:\/\/assets.delveinsight.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/02\/15170721\/Untitled-Project-1.png 878w, https:\/\/assets.delveinsight.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/02\/15170721\/Untitled-Project-1-20x20.png 20w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 878px) 100vw, 878px\" \/><\/figure><div class=\"wp-block-media-text__content\">\n\n<p style=\"background-color:#dbedf7\" class=\"has-text-color has-background has-very-dark-gray-color\"><em> &#8220;<strong>The estimates show a higher incidence of Cholangiocarcinoma in the United States with 6,768 cases in 2017. <\/strong><\/em> <br><em><strong>Among the EU5 countries, Germany had the highest incident population of Cholangiocarcinoma with 4,471 cases, followed by Italy and the United Kingdom. Spain had the lowest incident population. On the other hand, Japan had 4,287 incident cases of Cholangiocarcinoma. <\/strong><\/em><\/p>\n\n<\/div><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p>In addition, at advanced stages, the diagnosis shows <strong>ICC <\/strong>more frequently than <strong>ECC<\/strong>. As per <strong>DelveInsight\u2019s <\/strong>estimations, the incidence of cholangiocarcinoma has been increasing worldwide. The total diagnosed incident population of Cholangiocarcinoma (CCA) in the <strong>7MM <\/strong>was <strong>18,470 <\/strong>in the year 2017.<em><strong> <\/strong><\/em> <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-background\" style=\"background-color:#dbedf7\"><strong>\u201c<\/strong><em><strong>Cholangiocarcinoma occurs slightly more often in men than in women. It usually affects patients who are between 50-70 years of age<\/strong><\/em><strong>.\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-diagnosis-and-treatment\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Diagnosis_and_Treatment\"><\/span><strong>Diagnosis and Treatment<\/strong><span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h4>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Blood tests<\/strong>&nbsp;measure liver function that checks the level of cancer antigen&nbsp;<strong>(CA) 19-9<\/strong>&nbsp;in blood. Doctors use&nbsp;<strong>Endoscopic retrograde cholangiopancreatography<\/strong>&nbsp;<br>(ERCP). In this, a camera examines the area where bile ducts connect to <strong>small intestine<\/strong> are some of the ways doctors use to&nbsp;<strong>diagnose<\/strong>&nbsp;the disease. Similarly,&nbsp;<strong>imaging tests<\/strong>&nbsp;locate abnormality in internal organs.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The&nbsp;<strong>treatment<\/strong>&nbsp;of cholangiocarcinoma depends on the size and location of the tumor. The current standard cholangiocarcinoma treatment includes&nbsp;<strong>Surgery,Photodynamic therapies<\/strong>,&nbsp;<strong>Targeted therapies<\/strong>,&nbsp;<strong>Radio sensitizers,<\/strong>&nbsp;and&nbsp;<strong>Chemotherapies<\/strong>. The main treatment is surgery.&nbsp;<strong>However<\/strong>, if surgery is not effective then&nbsp;<strong>radiation therapy<\/strong>&nbsp;and&nbsp;<strong>chemotherapy<\/strong>&nbsp;come into use.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The use of\u00a0<strong>locoregional therapies<\/strong>\u00a0in patients with intrahepatic cholangiocarcinoma comes into the <g class=\"gr_ gr_12 gr-alert gr_gramm gr_inline_cards gr_disable_anim_appear Grammar only-ins doubleReplace replaceWithoutSep\" id=\"12\" data-gr-id=\"12\">establishment<\/g>. Different methods of intra-<strong>arterial <\/strong>therapy include\u00a0<strong>bland embolization<\/strong>,\u00a0<strong>trans-arterial chemoembolization (TACE),<\/strong>\u00a0the use of drug-eluting beads and\u00a0<strong>radioembolization.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-emerging-therapies-top-players\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Emerging_therapies_Top_Players\"><\/span><strong>Emerging therapies &amp; Top Players<\/strong><span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h4>\n\n\n\n<p>There are key players such as <strong>Agios Pharmaceuticals, Incyte Corporation, Sirtex Medical, Delcath Systems, Immunitor LLC, Jiangsu HengRui Medicine<\/strong>, and many others are developing therapies for its treatment.
