Malignant (cancerous) or borderline (low malignant potential) ovarian tumors can spread (metastasize) to other parts of the body and can be fatal.

Ovarian clear cell carcinoma (OCCC) is the second most common subtype after high-grade serous carcinoma (HGSC). The biology and clinical behavior of OCCC are distinct from other EOCs. OCCC has a unique genetic profile characterized by frequent ARID1A and PIK3CA mutations, MET amplification, and rare p53 mutation.

Clear cell carcinoma of the ovary is a rare and distinct histotype of epithelial ovarian carcinomas. Women diagnosed with clear cell carcinomas are usually younger and diagnosed at earlier stages than those with the most common high-grade serous histology. Endometriosis is considered a main risk factor for the development of clear cell carcinoma of the ovary, and it can be considered a precursor of this tumor, as it is identified in more than 50% of patients with clear cell carcinoma.
