This leads to neuronal injury, cerebral edema, and encephalitis, which can result in seizures, neurological deficits, coma, and, in severe cases, death.
The diagnosis of equine encephalitis is based on clinical presentation, exposure history, and laboratory confirmation. Infection is confirmed by detecting virus-specific IgM antibodies in serum or cerebrospinal fluid using enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA), while reverse transcription-polymerase chain reaction (RT-PCR) or viral isolation may be used during the early stages of infection.
There is no specific antiviral treatment approved for equine encephalitis. Management is primarily supportive and includes hospitalization, fluid and electrolyte management, seizure control, respiratory support when necessary, and measures to reduce intracranial pressure.
