Gingival Recession Market Disease: Understanding and Treatment Algorithm
The DelveInsight’s Gingival recession market report gives a thorough understanding of Gingival recession by including details such as disease definition, symptoms, causes, pathophysiology, diagnosis, and treatment.
Gingival recession, also known as receding gums, is one of the most common esthetic concerns associated with the periodontal tissues. It is characterized by the displacement of the gingival margin apically from the cementoenamel junction, or CEJ, or from the former location of the CEJ in which restorations have distorted the location or appearance of the CEJ. Several classifications have been proposed in the literature to facilitate the diagnosis of gingival recessions. Miller (1985) proposed a classification system which is probably still the most widely used system for describing the gingival recession. Four types of recession defects were categorized as class I, class II, class III and class IV.
Gingival recession is a very common dental problem; therefore, most people do not know they have gum recession as it occurs gradually. The first sign of gum recession is usually tooth sensitivity, or the patient may notice a tooth which looks longer than normal. Typically, a notch can be felt near the gum line as well.
Primary causes of gingival recession are low-level and long-lasting trauma, also known as chronic trauma. Other causes are chronic inflammatory periodontal disease, periodontal treatment, genetics, insufficient dental care, tobacco product consumption, and grinding and clenching of teeth. The consequences of these are poor aesthetics, gingival bleeding and plaque retention, hypersensitivity and risk of the development of root caries as root surfaces are exposed to oral environment and aid in the withholding of plaque.
Gingival recession Diagnosis
Receding gums are diagnosed by a dentist. A physical examination can indicate issues. A probe may also be used to measure gum pockets. A probe is a process that uses a small, painless ruler. According to the National Institute of Dental and Craniofacial Research, normal pocket sizes range between 1–3 millimeters. Anything larger is a sign of gum disease.
Gingival recession Treatment
Depending on the symptoms the patient exhibits, the diagnostic process is carried out. Treatment usually involves restorations, crowns, and veneers, construction of gingival mask, root conditioning, frenectomy and lastly surgical root coverage techniques.

Key findings
- In a study conducted by Carlos et al (2018), 69.7% of subjects had ≥ 1 site with recession ≥ 1 mm, and 30.3% had ≥ 1 site with recession ≥ 3 mm. A total of 28.6% of teeth were affected by recession ≥ 1 mm, and 7.6% by recession ≥ 3 mm. The most frequently affected tooth types were first maxillary molars, first and second mandibular premolars, and the first maxillary premolar. Factors signify- cantly associated with recession ≥ 4 mm were: older age, male gender, lower income, former smoker, diabetes, and less frequent tooth brushing.
- A study by Sather (2014) assessed the recession descriptives by gender. Forty-four teeth were measured for the gingival recession in males, and 70 teeth were measured in females. Mean recession was higher in males than females (1.83mm ± 2.06mm vs. 1.73mm ± 1.28mm); however, this difference was not statistically significant (Mann-Whitney U Test, p = 0.33). Males showed a greater range of recession than females (0–6.72mm vs. 0–5.7mm, respectively).
- The prevalence of recession in the anterior zone in patients at the University of Santiago de Compostela (USC) dental faculty was 26%. The average age of the patients in this study was 53.35 years. Of the total patients with the gingival recession in the anterior zone, 57.7% were women (Lorenzo et al., 2019).
- In a study published by the Journal of Dental Research, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) estimated that at 52.79% and 51.10% respectively, New Mexico and Hawaii had the United States’ highest prevalence of periodontitis, the advanced form of gum disease (American Academy of Periodontology, 2016).
- Sekino et al. (2020) found that the mean plaque score and gingival bleeding rate of the residents were 64 and 48%, respectively, and that the degree of attachment loss increased with age. In conclusion, it was stated that periodontal disease is still prevalent in the current Japanese population, even though some improvement occurred.

Emerging Gingival Recession Drugs
The emerging landscape of Gingival Recession is not very prominent. Not many companies have indulged themselves in developing a novel treatment option. Markman Biologics Corporation recently announced the execution of a strategic agreement with The McGuire Institute as a principal investigators for an upcoming clinical trial on humans. The main objective of the trial which is being conducted is to evaluate clinical healing outcomes of microsurfaced cadaveric ADM (Markman Biologics) used in sites with < 1 mm of attached gingiva requiring soft tissue grafting without root coverage as compared to control cadaveric ADM.
There are various institutes that are working on Gingival Recession by using Mesenchymal Stem Cells, and Ubiquinon (Coenzyme Q10) Application. Majorly companies are developing devices to address this condition.
Gingival recession Market Outlook
Gingival recession can have several causes. The treatment of receding gums mainly depends upon the cause. Gum recession can not be reversed; this means receded gum tissue would not grow back. However, one can keep the problem from getting poorer. If the gums become unattached from the tooth, it is important to treat gum recession. Otherwise, with the passage of time, this condition gets worse.
If hard brushing or poor dental hygiene is the cause, it is recommended to talk to the dental hygienist about changing the brushing and flossing behaviors. An individual may need to have occasional deep cleaning treatments called “scaling and root planing” to treat gum recession.
Mild gum recession can be treated by a professional deep cleaning in the affected area. During the deep cleaning, plaque and tartar are removed, and the exposed root area is smoothed over, making it more difficult for bacteria to attach itself. If deep cleaning is not sufficient to treat the condition, because of excess loss of bone and deep pockets, then receding gums surgery is required. In addition, an effective management and prevention program should help to improve patient awareness about gingival recession and to adopt adequate oral hygiene measures.
Open flap scaling and root planing: During this procedure, the dentist or periodontist (gum doctor) folds back the affected gum tissue, removes the harmful bacteria from the pockets, and then snugly secures the gum tissue in place over the tooth root, thus eliminating the pockets or reducing their size. The pedicle flap was the first periodontal plastic surgery procedure proposed in 1956 for root coverage. This procedure consists of the repositioning of the donor tissue from an area adjacent to the recession defect to cover the exposed root surface. Since the flap remains attached at the base, it retains its blood supply, facilitating the revascularisation with the recipient site.
Pinhole surgical technique: Pinhole surgical technique (PST) is a relatively new treatment for mild to moderate receding gums. PST is a minimally invasive procedure that involves making a tiny hole in the gum tissue above the exposed tooth root. A dentist will insert a special tool into the hole to separate the gum from the tooth, and then they will stretch and reposition the gum back over the exposed tooth root.
Construction of Gingival Mask: Patients who have several teeth with recession may have unaesthetic appearance because of black triangles. In these cases, where a surgical procedure is not appropriate, silicone flexible gingival veneer or mask may be used.
Antibiotic treatments can be used either in combination with surgery and other therapies or alone, to reduce or temporarily eliminate the bacteria associated with gum disease or suppress the destruction of the tooth's attachment to the bone. Few commonly used antibiotic drugs are doxycycline and tetracycline,, as prescribed by the dentist.
Apart from these, one of the traditional ways to treat gum recession is through the use of gum grafting which has been a proven method to restore a healthy gum line, but this procedure requires cutting and stitching. It can be a painful process for our patients, and it can take several weeks to heal.
