Hereditary Deafness Overview

Deafness can be transferred from parents to the child and can develop over time during childhood or adulthood. It can be autosomal recessive or dominant, X-linked, or mitochondrial-related. Almost 1% of all human genes are involved in the genetic hearing loss process. One may be born with a hearing loss know as congenital or acquire it over time. It is estimated that around two-thirds of cases of childhood-onset hearing loss have a genetic cause, with the outstanding one-third affected by environmental factors, e.g., cytomegalovirus infection, meningitis, acquired conductive loss, and the impact of extracorporeal membrane oxygenation. Prelingual hearing loss is present before speech develops. It is known that all congenital hearing loss is prelingual, but not all prelingual hearing loss is congenital. Postlingual hearing loss occurs after the development of normal speech. The number of genetic causes responsible for hereditary deafness is estimated to be over 400, with around 60 genes of hearing loss have been discovered so far.


Prelingual nonsyndromic hearing loss is 80% autosomal recessive, 20% autosomal dominant, and 1–1.5% percent X-linked, mitochondrial, or another inheritance pattern.
