Peripheral Artery Disease (PAD) Epidemiology
Key Highlights
- Most PAD patients were estimated in the US, followed by EU4 and the UK, and Japan. In 2022, the US accounted for the maximum patient share in the 7MM, i.e., 55%, followed by EU4 and the UK.
- In 2022, the total number of diagnosed patients of PAD in the 7MM accounted for approximately 17.25 million cases. These cases are expected to surge during the forecast period (2025-2034).
- Gender-specific diagnosed prevalent cases of PAD were higher in females (around 5 million cases) compared to females (around 4.5 million) in 2022 in the 7MM.
- Among the age groups of 40–49 years, 50–59 years, 60–69 years, 70–79 years, and =80 years, the highest number of cases was estimated to be in the group 80+ years, accounting for around 33.5% of the total diagnosed cases in the US in 2022.

Peripheral Artery Disease Understanding
Peripheral Artery Disease Overview
Peripheral arterial disease (PAD) is a complex clinical syndrome of no symptoms, claudication, ischemic pain at rest, and ischemic tissue loss such as nonhealing ulcers or gangrene. CLI is the end stage of PAD, and the macrovascular lesions induce a reduction of distal perfusion.
PAD in the legs or lower extremities is the narrowing or blockage of the vessels that carry blood from the heart to the legs, primarily caused by the buildup of fatty plaque in the arteries is called atherosclerosis.
In PAD, the legs or arms, usually the legs, do not receive enough blood flow to keep up with the demand, which may cause leg pain when walking (claudication) and other symptoms.
Although 65–75% of patients with PAD are asymptomatic, the classic presenting symptom is intermittent claudication which is usually described as muscle cramps, fatigue, or pain in the lower legs induced by exercise and rapidly relieved by rest; often, the symptom location indicates the level of arterial involvement. Less commonly, patients may present with critical limb ischemia.
Peripheral Artery Disease Diagnosis
Physical examination of the legs for symptoms like shiny skin, brittle toenails, hair loss on legs and feet, and leg ulcers are evaluated for the diagnosis of PAD. The ankle-brachial pressure index (ABPI) test is widely used to diagnose PAD. Further testing, like an ultrasound scan or an angiogram, is done when there is uncertainty about the diagnosis.
Further details related to diagnosis are provided in the report…
Peripheral Artery Disease Epidemiology
As the market is derived using a patient-based model, the PAD epidemiology chapter in the report provides historical as well as forecasted epidemiology segmented by Diagnosed Prevalent Cases of PAD, Gender-specific Diagnosed Prevalent Cases of PAD, Age-specific Diagnosed Prevalent Cases of PAD, and Severity-specific Diagnosed Prevalent Cases of PAD in the 7MM covering the United States, EU4 countries (Germany, France, Italy, and Spain), and the UK, and Japan from 2021 to 2034.
- Of the total diagnosed prevalent cases of PAD in the 7MM, the US comprised the highest number of cases, approximately 9,506 thousand cases in 2022, and is projected to increase during the forecast period (2025-2034).
- Among the EU4 and the UK, Germany had the highest diagnosed prevalent population of PAD (approximately 2,371 thousand cases). On the other hand, Spain (767 thousand cases) had the lowest diagnosed prevalent population in EU4 and the UK countries and the 7MM.
- PAD has been identified as a female-dominant disease; in our analysis, the number of females suffering was higher than males. In 2022, 53% of cases of PAD were females, while 47% were males in the 7MM.
- Out of the total diagnosed prevalent cases, the age group 80+ years had the highest number of cases compared to other age groups.
KOL Views
To keep up with current market trends, we take KOLs and SMEs’ opinions working in the domain through primary research to fill the data gaps and validate our secondary research. Industry Experts contacted for insights on Peripheral Artery Disease evolving treatment landscape, patient reliance on conventional therapies, patient’s therapy switching acceptability, drug uptake, along with challenges related to accessibility, including HCPs, Physicians, and others.
DelveInsight’s analysts connected with 10+ KOLs to gather insights; however, interviews were conducted with 5+ KOLs in the 7MM. Centers such as the Massachusetts General Hospital, Asklepios Westklinikum Hamburg, Institut Municipal d’Investigacio´ Me`dica (IMIM), etc. were contacted.
