Sjogren's Syndrome Epidemiology Summary

Sjogren's Disease Epidemiology Trends

  • According to DelveInsight’s estimates, in 2025, diagnosed prevalent cases of Sjogren’s disease were distributed across the 7MM, with the highest share observed in the United States, followed by EU4 & the UK, while Japan accounted for a comparatively smaller proportion of cases.
  • Sjögren’s disease represents a major public health burden in the United States, affecting up to 4 million individuals, with approximately 2.5 million patients still undiagnosed despite its systemic and progressive nature.
  • It is more prevalent in countries due to aging populations, improved disease awareness, greater access to diagnostic testing, and the higher incidence of autoimmune disorders, particularly among women
  • Among antigen-specific cases of Sjogren’s disease, auto-antibodies (+ve) cases were highest, followed by anti-Ro/SSA (+ve), and then anti-La/SSB (+ve).
  • The increasing prevalence of autoimmune disorders, growing recognition and diagnosis of Sjögren’s disease, and the substantial burden of systemic complications are expected to sustain the Sjögren’s disease market over the next decade. Advances in diagnostic approaches, improved disease awareness, and the development of targeted biologic therapies will remain key drivers of market growth.

Sjogren’s Disease Understanding and Diagnosis Algorithm

Sjogren’s Disease Overview

Sjögren’s disease is a chronic autoimmune disorder characterized by immune-mediated damage to the salivary and lacrimal glands, resulting in dry mouth and dry eyes. It can occur as a primary condition or alongside other autoimmune diseases such as rheumatoid arthritis and systemic lupus erythematosus. The disease predominantly affects middle-aged women and is associated with genetic, hormonal, and environmental factors. In addition to glandular symptoms, Sjögren’s Disease may cause systemic complications involving multiple organs, leading to significant long-term morbidity and reduced quality of life.

Sjogren’s Disease Diagnosis

Sjögren’s disease is diagnosed through a comprehensive clinical evaluation, assessment of characteristic sicca symptoms, serological testing, and objective measures of glandular dysfunction. Key diagnostic modalities include anti-SSA/Ro and anti-SSB/La antibody testing, antinuclear antibody (ANA) and rheumatoid factor assessment, Schirmer’s test, ocular surface staining, salivary flow measurement, salivary gland imaging, and where appropriate, minor salivary gland biopsy. Additional investigations may be undertaken to evaluate systemic manifestations, establish disease severity, support risk stratification, and inform long-term disease management and monitoring.

Key Findings from Sjogren’s Disease Epidemiological Analysis and Forecast

  • As per DelveInsight’s analysis, in 2025, the total diagnosed prevalent cases of Sjogren's disease, were ~3,350,000 in the 7MM, which are expected to increase during the forecast period, i.e., 2026–2036.
  • In 2025, the diagnosed prevalent cases of Sjogren’s disease were the highest in the US accounting for ~1,800,000 cases which are estimated to increase by 2036.
  • Among the EU4 & the UK, UK reported the highest diagnosed prevalent cases of Sjogren’s Disease in 2025, followed by Germany, while Spain reported the least diagnosed prevalence across the major European markets.
  • In the US, among the severity-specific cases, ~1,530,000 accounted for mild and ~271,000 accounted for moderate to severe cases in 2025. These cases are expected to increase during the forecast period.
  • In 2025, the diagnosed prevalent cases of Sjögren’s Syndrome were approximately ~180,000 in males, while females accounted for ~1,620,000 cases, significantly higher than males, in the US.
  • In Japan, Sjögren’s disease exhibits a marked female predominance, with women accounting for 94.2% of diagnosed cases in 2025.
