Laser Resurfacing Devices Overview

Laser resurfacing is also known as laser peel, lasabrasion, or laser vaporization and used to treat a variety of skin problems such as acne scars and wrinkles on the face. Laser resurfacing techniques are very precise and removes the skin layer by layer by directing short, concentrated beams of light. Laser resurfacing is of two types- ablative and non-ablative. An ablative treatment results in some degree of interruption of the outer layer of the epidermis resulting in a wound. The non-ablative treatment is accomplished without disrupting the outer layer of the epidermis – without creating a wound. The commonly used ablative laser resurfacing practices are CO2 laser resurfacing and erbium laser resurfacing. The newest version of CO2 laser resurfacing (fractionated CO2) uses very short pulsed light energy (known as ultrapulse) or continuous light beams that are delivered in a scanning pattern to remove thin layers of skin with minimal heat damage. The infrared lasers, fractional lasers, and other high impact light sources are included in non-ablative laser resurfacing procedures. The device is designed to deliver the energy as “micro-beams”, as “pulses of light” or isolated “high energy waves and also prevent skin outer layer while delivering the therapeutic treatment. The method is used to treat different skin issues, including wrinkles, scars, warts, enlarged oil glands on the nose, and other conditions.
