Spinal Stenosis Overview

Spinal Stenosis is a condition in which the gaps inside the spine narrow, putting pressure on the nerves that run through it. It is most common in the lower back and neck. With age, the ligaments of the spinal column, especially the ligamentum flavum, stiffen, become less flexible, and thicken, contributing to Spinal Stenosis. The degeneration of both the facet joints and the intervertebral discs causes this narrowing. Bone spurs (also known as osteophytes) develop into the spinal canal in this state. When the facet joints become arthritic, they grow, which reduces the amount of space available for the nerve roots. Facet arthropathy is the medical term for this disorder.
