Rare diseases affect a small percent of the population. In the United States, a rare disease is a condition that affects fewer than 200,000 people in the US (Orphan Drug Act ). In the European Union, a rare disease affects fewer than 1 in 2,000 people. Similarly, different federations follow different definitions to label a condition as a rare disease.
